{"id":493,"date":"2022-02-04T18:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-02-05T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.chroniclesoftright.com\/blog\/?p=493"},"modified":"2022-02-05T17:04:20","modified_gmt":"2022-02-05T23:04:20","slug":"a-crate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chroniclesoftright.com\/blog\/2022\/02\/04\/a-crate\/","title":{"rendered":"A Crate!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This is the first asset spotlight for the new project so I decided to go with something as simple and clich\u00e9 as possible.\u00a0 So I made a crate.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chroniclesoftright.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Render-2022.02.01.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-494\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chroniclesoftright.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Render-2022.02.01-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chroniclesoftright.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Render-2022.02.01-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/www.chroniclesoftright.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Render-2022.02.01-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/www.chroniclesoftright.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Render-2022.02.01-400x300.png 400w, https:\/\/www.chroniclesoftright.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Render-2022.02.01-240x180.png 240w, https:\/\/www.chroniclesoftright.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Render-2022.02.01.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>This is a rendered image out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blender.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blender<\/a>, so it isn&#8217;t necessarily exactly how it will look in the game world, but it should be pretty close.\u00a0 I&#8217;m trying to keep everything as resource-light as I possibly can, so this crate has 240 triangles and a single diffuse texture that is 256&#215;256.\u00a0 The triangle count is actually a little higher than I expected but I wanted some minor wobbles in the actual geometry to try and make it look a little more interesting, and unfortunately that requires triangles.\u00a0 Still, 240 is pretty low for a game asset of any size at all.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m okay with the look of the crate overall but the wood texture needs some work.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t even have a <a href=\"https:\/\/estore.wacom.com\/en-US\/wacom-intuos-pro-l-us-pth860.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drawing tablet<\/a> right now so with my limited art skills and dragging around a clunky mouse this was the best I could do.\u00a0 I will eventually redraw that.\u00a0 The metal isn&#8217;t exactly professional quality, but I&#8217;m still fairly happy with it for the time being.<\/p>\n<p>Once the game is a little farther along I will do asset spotlights using renders from the actual game, but for now you can at least see where I&#8217;m trying to go with this.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of the game world, I found the code for the world editor I had previously written so I am in the process of tweaking that to work for the new environment of this iteration of the game.\u00a0 That should save me a ton of time because the editor is already around 1800 lines of code, and tweaking that much code base rather that rewriting from scratch will be a big help.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to try really hard to post to the blog every Friday this month and so far I&#8217;m off to a good start, so fingers crossed I&#8217;ll see you in a week with another update.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the first asset spotlight for the new project so I decided to go with something as simple and clich\u00e9 as possible.\u00a0 So I made a crate.
